Yesterday, during lunch with my colleague a topic about smoking arose. Everyone gave their opinion about it and the discussion went on for about 30 minutes. Everyone has different opinions and mostly said that smoking is not good (obviously true!!!) and smokers are selfish.(which I do not agree). I see smokers as selfless people who are contributing for the good of others. This was my justification...
When a smoker buys a box of cigarette, he is actually contributing to our economy by paying the tax. No matter how high the price goes, he's not going to "give up" and will continue to contribute to the economy. What happens when he did that? Obviously, the income of the Government will increase. From the view of traditional economy theory, we assume Government only spends money for the benefits of its people. When the income increases, Government spends it to upgrade the infrastructure, provide more scholarships and etc. In nutshell, Government will use it for Malaysians' benefits. Isn't that great? The smokers are actually contributing for our benefits. They are like candles, "burn" their self to give us "light".
Not only that, when they fall sick due to the smoking habit they go to hospitals and clinics for treatment. Again they are increasing the revenue of the health-care centers and the health-care centers pay tax for the revenue. What happens next? Tax increases the revenue of the Government...And Government spends it for the benefits of Malaysians. When smokers are doing such a good deed for the benefits of all, how can we say they are selfish??
Many say the smokers are not only spoiling their own health but also the health of the people around them through passive smoking. There is always a solution for this, when someone smokes in the public places , as a concerned citizen we sound the person directly so that he/she stops immediately. If you don't dare to sound the person just leave the place to save your life.
I am not posting this to encourage smoking habit or as a support for my smoking friends. The reason is there are always a good thing behind every bad thing. It is just how you see it and justify it. Same goes to individuals, when we don't like someone, we only see the faults and flaws. But what we don't realize is that the faults and flaws are a part of them and they are different from us because of it. So always take time to get know a person well before judging them because we are not born evil. Each one of us are unique because of our individuality. What is right for someone, might be wrong for another. As long as you know what you are doing and able to justify it to others , you are right.
Everyone has different dreams and life purposes, so have the courage to achieve yours and also take time to understand others dreams . We can really make a significant difference in life! CHEERS!
